Reflection letter

My personal goals in school are to get my AA in history and then go on to a four-year university and get my BA in history and possibly a minor in archeology. I like to get dirty so digging in the ground would be fun for me. I want to do my Masters work at Trinity College in Dublin Ireland, the library there is extensive and they have a very good history program. I also love Ireland and its tales of fairies, leprechauns and blarney. Writing is a little hard for me because I have two different learning disabilities, dyslexia and ADD, finding time to concentrate on writing has been hard. Plus I have to have some kind of background noise and so getting background noise that I can actually write to has not been easy. I have done my best however, and I hope the work can be seen in

Over the course of the quarter we have had to study in depth aspects of community, identity and pop culture. My views on identity and community changed over the course of the readings we did as well as the discussions. My ideas about community changed possibly the most after we watched the movie Remember the Titans. “To me this movie made me look at how I treat other people and my own ideas and attitudes toward people.” After that I spoke to a friend of mine from South Africa about apartheid and write a paper on that. Over the course of writing that paper it was brought to my attention even more that if one does not learn from history a person or a country is bound to repeat it even if it isn’t your own country. A quote from my paper given to me by Laura the person I interviewed shows a little of what I’m talking about “White people could go everywhere and do everything. For instance, there were white areas (suburbs), whites only schools, toilets, cinemas, restaurants, etc.” To respond to that I added how the same kind of thing happened in the history of the United States. “The Civil war brought about the ending of slavery, but until the time of the Civil Rights Movement communities largely consisted of Whites only or Blacks only. There were also white only schools, toilets, restaurants, etc.” The pop culture unit we did largely consisted of the groups of us taking a look at different kinds of traditions that have moved in to push out old traditions. Most of the discussion seemed to center around Britney Spears and how she wasn’t a very good role model. I chose to look at one of my favorite things, anime, and write a paper on that.

For the portfolio itself we picked several different pieces to show off the talents we have learned from writing this quarter. My first picked piece is the analysis of High school cafeterias. For my revision piece I decided to redo the last blog assignment we did I think it could be a lot better. The audience and voice piece I decided to use the second blog assignment we ever did. It is a very different look at communities. The last piece I picked for this is the first blog assignment we did where we looked at what was in our wallet and posted what that could mean about us. It is a very good look at what kind of person I am. I hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed writing them.

  1. Hey Nick,
I really liked reading through your blog. I especially liked your reflection letter, it was very thoughful. Your revision piece was really great, I like that you pointed out what you changed. I didn't know that you wanted to go to college out of the country, that's really exciting and I wish you the best of luck.

  2. Naomi,

Your reflection letter really struck a cord with me, as I am also extremely passionate about history and have made it a part of my major as well (I'll be doubling it up with English). I really enjoyed reading through your portfolio. Good luck in Ireland!
